Circuit Breaker States

Each engine has its own circuit breaker that protects the system from cascading failures. The circuit breaker monitors consecutive failures and temporarily disables unhealthy engines.

CLOSED — the engine is healthy and operating normally. All requests pass through to the engine. This is the normal operating state.

OPEN — the engine has failed 5 consecutive times. All requests to this engine are immediately rejected with a 503 ENGINE_UNAVAILABLE error without hitting the upstream. The circuit stays open for 60 seconds.

HALF_OPEN — the 60-second cooldown has elapsed. One probe request is allowed through to test if the engine has recovered. If the probe succeeds, the circuit closes and normal operation resumes. If the probe fails, the circuit reopens for another 60 seconds.

This pattern prevents hammering a failing engine while allowing automatic recovery. Credits are refunded when requests are rejected due to an open circuit.
